Joseph Barboza is shot and killed in San Francisco.

An admitted “hit man,” Barboza had testified against alleged New England organized crime figures in 1968 and entered the new federal witness protection program in 1969. He is allegedly gunned down by Boston mob capo Joseph “J.R.” Russo.
